AQUAMAN Project strengthens Mediterranean Water Governance Synergies at BlueMissionMed Event

11/07/2025

The AQUAMAN project fostered collaboration between EU initiatives on water management, depollution, and restoration in the Mediterranean. Organised by BlueMissionMed, Dialogue4Innovation, and key partners, the event connected Interreg Euro-MED projects with the EU Mission Restore Our Ocean & Waters. AQUAMAN showcased its transferable solutions, reinforcing its commitment to adaptive governance and innovative digital tools for water restoration.

On July 8, the Interreg Euro-MED AQUAMAN project participated in the online event “Boosting synergies for innovative solutions in water management, depollution and restoration in the Mediterranean Basin”. The webinar was organised by BlueMissionMed (BMM), the Interreg Euro-MED Dialogue4Innovation (D4I), and key partners of the EU Mission Restore Our Ocean & Waters and the Interreg Euro-MED Programme.

This event marked the first in a series of cross-fertilisation activities designed to foster collaboration between initiatives with different programme strategies but shared goals in water management, depollution, and restoration. It aimed to build stronger links between the EU Mission Restore Our Ocean & Waters, implemented in the Mediterranean through BlueMissionMed, and stakeholders from the Interreg Euro-MED programme.

D4I, part of the Innovative Sustainable Economy (ISE) Mission, plays a key role in facilitating these connections. Through its Liaising4Advocacy strategy—shared with its sister project C4I—D4I seeks to engage Thematic Projects from all four Euro-MED Missions (ISE, Green & Living Areas, Natural Heritage, and Sustainable Tourism) to create synergies with EU-level water and ocean missions.

The event, co-organised by IFREMER, CPMR-IMC, CNR, FVA, and the Emilia-Romagna Region, brought together experts, institutional stakeholders, and thematic projects to exchange best practices and align governance strategies. CPMR-IMC, as a partner in both BMM and D4I, sponsored the cross-cooperation efforts.

The session was divided into two parts: The part 1 featured institutional updates from the European Commission and the Interreg Euro-MED Joint Secretariat, focusing on EU Missions, governance tools, and coordinated strategies. The Part 2 hosted an interactive Miró Board workshop, mapping innovative solutions for water depollution and smart water management.

AQUAMAN actively contributed by showcasing its catalogue of transferable solutions —strongly align with BlueMissionMed’s challenges and the ISE Mission. By engaging in this collaborative platform, AQUAMAN reinforces its commitment to adaptive governance frameworks and the deployment of digital tools for effective water restoration.

Participation in the event also supports D4I and C4I’s efforts to connect technical innovation with policy frameworks, ensuring that project-based solutions can influence governance at a wider scale.
